Lifetime educator, Dr. Mindy Shaw, maintained a philosophy in her classroom of 4 to 8 year olds to "teach humanity daily" in addition to the more traditional skill sets of reading, writing and math. Now, in an era of remote and hybrid learning, the notion of teaching humanity is somewhat threatened. She has created a series of e-books and paperbacks so that parents can have the tools they need for also teaching social and emotional skills, and in this series, Dr. Shaw discusses what it means to teach humanity both in general and in an era of learning via computer.

In this episode, Dr. Shaw imparts a valuable lesson that works to serve the listener both in their own life as well as when in parenting mode. Dr. Shaw speaks here about dealing with social or interpersonal situations where one is "on the outs." There are strong feelings that can come up when one feels not included... there can also be a tendency to rationalize what's going on or to assign blame. Dr. Shaw uses a real situation close to her own heart in order to illustrate at least one way to navigate the feeling of not being included. Understanding ways to deflect ill will and ways to be confident can be incredibly valuable, not only for adults but certainly for children whose sense of safety and security is in a formative stage.
