Lifetime educator, Dr. Mindy Shaw, maintained a philosophy in her classroom of 4 to 8 year olds to "teach humanity daily" in addition to the more traditional skill sets of reading, writing and math. Now, in an era of remote and hybrid learning, the notion of teaching humanity is somewhat threatened. She has created a series of e-books and paperbacks so that parents can have the tools they need for also teaching social and emotional skills, and in this series, Dr. Shaw discusses what it means to teach humanity both in general and in an era of learning via computer.

In this podcast, Dr. Shaw continues to review the "Ten Governing Principles" for effective communication with children that are featured in her brand new parenting guide just out and available at Amazon.com. Her new book for parents was first introduced and outlined by Dr. Shaw on a podcast several weeks back, and the concept for this new parenting guide is to help parents and educators communicate effectively with young children. The book has the appropriate title of I Like How You Speak to Me... A Parent's Guide to Effective Communication with Children, and the opening section of that book lists Dr. Shaw's Ten Governing Principles for effective communication. Dr. Shaw promised that for ten straight podcasts she would delve into a discussion of one guiding principle per episode, and this is the sixth of those ten. Her sixth governing principle, the one she discusses here, is TO NOT BE AFRAID TO MODEL MAKING MISTAKES for your child. As she discusses that guidance here, Dr. Shaw provides several illustrations of to not cover up mistakes in front of your children and in fact to teach them that there is no shame in making mistakes and that in fact, mistakes are where one finds learning opportunities.
