Lifetime educator, Dr. Mindy Shaw, maintained a philosophy in her classroom of 4 to 8 year olds to "teach humanity daily" in addition to the more traditional skill sets of reading, writing and math. Now, in an era of remote and hybrid learning, the notion of teaching humanity is somewhat threatened. She has created a series of e-books and paperbacks so that parents can have the tools they need for also teaching social and emotional skills, and in this series, Dr. Shaw discusses what it means to teach humanity both in general and in an era of learning via computer.

In this episode, Dr. Shaw continues to review the Q&A section of her recent parenting book called I LIKE HOW YOU SPEAK TO ME... A PARENT'S GUIDE TO EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION WITH CHILDREN. In recent podcasts, Dr. Shaw has reviewed the 10 governing principles for effective parent-child communication which forms the opening section of her book, however, the closing section of the book features the ten most frequently asked questions that Dr. Shaw hears from parents and podcast listeners. This week, she dives into fourth of those questions which is, "How can I get my child to talk when my child never wants to tell me how they feel?" Dr. Shaw has a terrific answer which is all outlined in this podcast, and her recommendation involves both honoring the fact that different children have different skills when it comes to verbal communication and also modeling how to initiate potentially sensitive conversations. It's really a masterful bit of parent-child advice, so enjoy.
